INVITATION

Geographical Names Workshop

FORGING A COMMON SOUTH AFRICAN IDENTITY AND NATIONHOOD THROUGH NAMING

South African National Geographical Names Council hereby invites you to attend the Geographical Names Workshop.

This workshop will be held on 9 to 10 June 2011 at the Indaba Hotel and Conference Centre in Fourways, Johannesburg.

The format envisaged for this event is a two day workshop.

Day 1 will see a key note address being given on how to achieve a common national identity and at the same time fulfil the main purpose of the South African Geographical Names Council Act of 1998 of transforming the geographical landscape of the country to reflect cultural and linguistic diversity of the country.

Commissions on day one will give delegates an opportunity to make their inputs and they will also get the opportunity to engage with the South African Geographical Names Council on matters of standardisation of geographical names.

Discussions will revolve around the procedures that need to be followed in changing names including the government mandate to bring about transformation in the cultural and heritage sector.

Day 2 is for report-backs on all subjects discussed on day one and a summation.
